C Brake by Jacobs Solenoid Issue |
This note identifies the fix for a common C Brake by Jacobs problem identified on N14, M11, and ISM engines built during a 5 month period beginning 01Jan1999, and ending 31May1999. |
A design issue with the solenoid has caused C Brake by Jacobs performance problems for N14, M11, and ISM engines. The customer complaint is that the brakes feel sluggish and appear to hang up (or stay engaged after the brake is deactivated). These symptoms typically occur regardless of oil temperature, not just during initial activation after cold start-up. However, cold oil conditions can aggravate the problem due to increased oil viscosity. |
The common symptoms are the result of a solenoid sticking issue. Jacobs corrected the problem by implementing a design change that entered production on 01Jun1999. A slotted sleeve was added internally to the solenoid. This sleeve allows a more rapid escape of oil from the solenoid, which improves the response time. Table 1 summarizes the part numbers affected by the design change. |
