Core will be considered accepted for exchange if visual inspection indicates the following:
1. Core is part number offered for exchange by Cummins. The forging number should be used to identify the part number.
2. Assembly is complete with nuts, bolts and matching cap. Inspect cap code to assure that it matches code stamped on the assembly. The codes should match in all cases: numberic, alpha or alpha numberic.
3. Forgings are not cracked or broken.
4. Core is not damaged due to scoring of the thrust faces or chamfered area.
5. Core is not damaged due to rod bearing failure.
6. Core that is damaged by non-operational causes such as rough handling, fire, improper removal or improper protection during storage is not acceptable.
7. Rust that occurs on exterior surfaces of components exposed to weather conditions from normal operating conditions is acceptable. Interior surfaces and components, such as rods, or any machined surface can only have light flash rust. Heavy rust due to improper storage is not acceptable.
8. Care must be taken when removing core. Prying off connecting rod from crankshaft will cause damage to the mating surface which is unacceptable for exchange.
Note: Connecting rod core with discoloration is acceptable. Overheated connecting rods which exhibit a bluish color in the affected area are not acceptable for exchange.
